There seems to be some good news regarding the ozone hole. In September 2019 the measurements were very encouraging!
Sometimes I just think that I would like to have a magic wand, or maybe a remote control with which to change with a click what I do not like; just time to hear your finger press on that white and voila button, all modified.
Often, however, changes, especially important ones, are somewhat slower processes. Days, months, years, or even decades pass before the results can be seen. Before we look back, we realize how important that action was, and of which perhaps there was no memory of it.
This would seem to be one of those cases.
According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, led by Dott.sa Antara Banerjee, it has been shown that, thanks to the Montreal Protocol signed in 1987, the ozone layer is recovering. The international treaty envisaged a drastic reduction in the production and use of many substances that damaged the ozone layer.
Professor Martyn Chipperfield, a well-known climate expert who was not involved in this research, said:
“It’s like we’ve turned the corner. We already had other signs that the ozone layer was slowly recovering: this study is the next step when we begin to see the effects of this recovery on the climate.“
The ozone layer in the Northern Hemisphere is likely to return to 1980 levels by 2030, and the last hole, the antarctic, is expected to close around 2060.
This is really important news. When the results begin to be clearly visible, it is much easier for other actions to be taken to further improve the situation.
A beautiful example of how, if you do not have a wand or remote control, any problem can be overcome with the union.
